Mastic is the resin produced by the mastic trees that thrive only in Chios. Chios is the only place on the planet where authentic mastic is produced. From the 5th century BC in Ancient Greece, Chios mastic was mentioned by Herodotus and Hippocrates for its medicinal use. It was also used throughout Roman and Ottoman times as a medicine, as chewing gum, as a breath freshener and cleanser, or simply as a sweet. Even today it remains particularly well known for its healing properties, Mastic is the essence and soul of this liqueur.
